Basic Biostatistics for Geneticists and Epidemiologists: A Practical Approach

Basic Biostatistics for Geneticists and Epidemiologists: A Practical Approach (Paperback)

by Robert C. Elston (Author), William Johnson (Author)

Basic Biostatistics for Geneticists and Epidemiologists: A Practical Approach

Anyone who attempts to read genetics or epidemiology research literature needs to understand the essentials of biostatistics. This book, a revised new edition of the successfulEssentials of Biostatistics has been written to provide such an understanding to those who have little or no statistical background and who need to keep abreast of new findings in this fast moving field. Unlike many other elementary books on biostatistics, the main focus of this book is to explain basic concepts needed to understand statistical procedures.

This Book:

  • Surveys basic statistical methods used in the genetics and epidemiology literature, including maximum likelihood and least squares.
  • Introduces methods, such as permutation testing and bootstrapping, that are becoming more widely used in both genetic and epidemiological research.
  • Is illustrated throughout with simple examples to clarify the statistical methodology.
  • Explains Bayes’ theorem pictorially.
  • Features exercises, with answers to alternate questions, enabling use as a course text.

Written at an elementary mathematical level so that readers with high school mathematics will find the content accessible. Graduate students studying genetic epidemiology, researchers and practitioners from genetics, epidemiology, biology, medical research and statistics will find this an invaluable introduction to statistics.

Epiduroscopy - Spinal Endoscopy

Epiduroscopy - Spinal Endoscopy

ISBN: 9783540875444
Autor: Günter Schütze
Editora: Springer

Endoscopy of the spinal canal – epiduroscopy (EDS) – has proven to be a safe, efficient and future-oriented interventional endoscopic procedure for everyday clinical use in diagnosing and managing pain syndromes.
Epiduroscopy can be used in the sacral, lumbar, thoracic and even cervical regions of the spine to identify pathological structures, carry out tissue biopsies and perform epidural pain provocation tests to assess the pain relevance of visualized anomalies, making it an excellent diagnostic tool.
Spinal endoscopy allows targeted epidural analgesic pharmacologic therapy for affected nerve roots or other painful regions in the epidural space.
Treatment options provided by epiduroscopy include laser-assisted adhesiolysis or resection of pain-generating fibrosis, catheter placement, as well as support with other invasive procedures for pain relief.
Professional EDS management enhances a multimodal philosophy and opens up new treatment strategies for patients. If used early on, it can control pain well before chronicity sets in.

Comprehensive Review of Headache Medicine

Comprehensive Review of Headache Medicine (Headache Cooperative of New England) (Hardcover)

by Morris Levin

Comprehensive Review of Headache Medicine (Headache Cooperative of New England)

Headache Medicine has recently become an official medical subspecialty. Practitioners who specialize in the field come from many different backgrounds including neurology, internal medicine, anesthesiology, rehabilitation medicine, family medicine, psychiatry, dentistry and others. A great deal of research is being done in HM, and, as a result, the field is one which is growing rapidly in every way. Interestingly, most patients with headache are not being treated by specialists in HM, in large part because of the vast numbers of patients requiring medical attention for headache disorders, and the relatively small number of bona fide specialists. Thus, there is a need for resources to guide these practitioners as they manage headache patients. There are several excellent scholarly texts in the field and numerous books for the public about headache. There are really no concise manuals of HM, however, there are books aimed at the bulk of skilled practitioners taking care of the major share of headache sufferers, who wish to understand the important concepts of diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in this complex field. This is the aim of Dr. Levin's book which consists of 4 parts: Part 1- Headache Medicine Basic Science, Part 2- Diagnosis of Primary Headache Disorders, Part 3- Diagnosis of Secondary Headache Disorders, and Part 4- Headache Treatment.
Chapters in each section are concise, but include cutting edge information about these aspects of headache medicine. The organization of the contents of this book is similar to the Curriculum for Headache Medicine designed by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) which is the organization responsible for accrediting Headache Medicine training programs and accrediting individual practitioners. The content of the book mirrors that of the UCNS board examination as well. Chapters include key tables and illustrations. Review questions are included at the end of each chapter and serve as a study resource. The editor is a charter diplomate of the UCNS HM examination and has directed board review courses for the American Headache Society and Headache Cooperative of New England. All of the eligible chapter authors have taken and passed this exam as well. The International Classification of Headache Disorders is used throughout this text and a concerted effort has been made to base content on evidence when available, rather than personal practices. Each chapter is intended as a stand alone monograph and as a result the book can be read in virtually any order.

Chronic Pain: A Primary Care Guide to Practical Management

Chronic Pain: A Primary Care Guide to Practical Management (Current Clinical Practice) (Hardcover)

by Dawn A. Marcus (Author)
Chronic Pain: A Primary Care Guide to Practical Management (Current Clinical Practice)

Patients with chronic pain present a unique set of challenges to the primary care clinician. In Chronic Pain: A Primary Care Guide to Practical Management, Second Edition, leading pain specialist Dawn A. Marcus, MD, again offers practical, clear, and succinct evidence-based approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of the myriad painful conditions clinicians see in their offices every day, such as headache, back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and abdominal pain. Sections addressing pain management in children, pregnant women, and seniors are also included. This new edition is designed to provide a pragmatic approach to assessing and treating the complex issues and characteristics of chronic pain patients. New chapters expand upon the evidence-based recommendations and practical office tools previously provided, with the addition of new chapters addressing risk management; pain syndromes in the shoulder, upper extremity, and lower extremity; and cancer and end-of-life pain. Of special value, the charting forms and patient educational materials on CD-ROM have been expanded to include ready-to-use screening tools for depression and anxiety, neuropathic pain tools, and fibromyalgia assessment tools. Chronic Pain: A Primary Care Guide to Practical Management, Second Edition provides strategies and techniques that are designed to improve the confidence with which the primary care physician can approach patients with complex pain complaints, reduce staff stress, and improve patient success.

Pain Management: Expanding the Pharmacological Options

  • Pain Management: Expanding the Pharmacological Options

    by Gary J. McCleane (Author)

Pain Management: Expanding the Pharmacological Options

Conventional pharmaceutical approaches to pain management are not always successful. Using only those medications that have an official indication for a certain condition reduces substantially the chance of the patient gaining pain relief and may expose them to intolerable side effects. However evidence now exists on the use of other drugs, produced for non-pain conditions, and how they can substantially increase the chances of pain relief.

Covering the most recent developments in this field, McCleane offers an alternative solution to pain treatment when conventional treatments fail. This pioneering book proposes evidence-based alternatives to current options in pain management, using well-grounded rationales for each given treatment.

This book is an ideal reference for the specialist and non-specialist prescriber alike and for practitioners from a wide variety of disciplines. It provides the evidence required and treatment algorithms for readers to use the drugs appropriately and to explore the field if they wish.

Current Pain D&T will represent the first clinical and truly management oriented book on pain medicine. It will cover with equal breadth and depth the management of the full array of both acute and chronic pain conditions. What will be especially unique about the approach here will be its ability to convey management strategies that correlate the severity of pain with the level of therapeutic intervention required to assuage it. The full array of drug treatment and analgesic strategies will be discussed in detail, and often-conveyed through a detailed management algorithm in each chapter. The treatment of pain has also become very much a multi-disciplinary effort in recent years, and this will be reflected by the fact that our editorial board on this volume includes a pain medicine specialist, internist, and a nurse practitioner.
